Lisdexamfetamine (Vyvanse) is another popular ADHD medication that can cause xerostomia, bruxism, and other oral side effects dentists might want to look out for. Keep on reading to learn more:

Generic Name: Lisdexamfetamine Dimesylate

Brand Name(s): Vyvanse

Pronunciation: lis dex am FET a meen

About this drug:

  • Vyvanse is a central nervous system (CNS) stimulant used to treat:

    • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) adults and children at least 6 years of age.

    • Moderate to severe binge eating disorders in patients over 18 years of age.

Dentistry-related tidbits:

  • Vyvanse can cause xerostomia, so you may want to consider prescribing a fluoride supplement if the patient has a high rate of caries and schedule more frequent dental exams.

  • Vyvanse can also cause bruxism, so you may want to consider evaluating the patient for a nightguard.

  • Vyvanse might elevate blood pressure. The addition of Epinephrine can intensify the increase in blood pressure and risk for tachycardia. Therefore, it is essential to closely monitor the patient's blood pressure and heart rate when administering local anesthetics containing Epinephrine.

  • Vyvanse can have serious drug interactions with commonly prescribed NSAIDs, steroids, narcotics, and more, so make sure to check for potential interactions before prescribing using a tool like Rx Check.

  • Vyvanse should not be taken within 14 days of taking Linezolid, as there may be a severe drug interaction, leading to serotonin syndrome, hypertension, hypertensive crisis, and tachycardia.

Fun facts:

  • Over 6 million children in the U.S. are diagnosed with ADHD.

  • Vyvanse may be habit-forming and has a high risk for abuse and dependence.

  • Stimulant medications such as Vyvanse increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke, especially in patients with hypertension or cardiac issues.

  • Adderall vs. Vyvanse: Adderall is composed of amphetamine salts directly, while Vyvanse is a prodrug of d-amphetamine. This means that Lisdexamfetamine Dimesylate is metabolized in the body to become the therapeutically active d-amphetamine molecule.

  • Street drug names for Vyvanse include: “uppers”, “speed”, and “pick-me-ups.”
