Famotidine is a popular drug used to treat heartburn, ulcers, and GERD. You might recognize it by its brand name, Pepcid. Here are some things you may not have known about Famotidine:


Generic Name: Famotidine

Brand Name(s): Pepcid, Pepcid AC, Pepcid AC Maximum Strength, Zantac 360, Zantac 360 Maximum Strength, Acid Reducer

Pronunciation: fam OH ti deen


About this drug:

  • Famotidine is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers.

  • It may also be used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and relieve heartburn from acid reflux.


Dentistry-related tidbits:

  • Famotidine may cause changes in taste, xerostomia, and thrombocytopenia.

  • Some cephalosporin antibiotics and antifungals can significantly decrease Famotidine levels and efficacy when taken together. Tizanidine and Triazolam can also cause adverse events like CNS depression and psychomotor impairment when combined with Famotidine.   • In the U.S., about 20% of people have GERD; 10% suffer from ulcers; and more than 60 million people experience heartburn at least once a month.
